Softness, elegance and tranquillity are all special features of this beautiful ‘Blended Quilt’. What is a blended quilt??? A Blended Quilt is where the fabrics ‘blend’ together so that no particular design element is highlighted to the viewer.

This is achieved by using soft colours in close values. If highlights are desirable, simply place some darker values in the area required.

This simple block is repeated throughout the quilt. Each combination of fabrics creates an entirely different looking block!

Finished size - 72" x 87"

Instructions

Block 1 - This block is a single fabric block using the feature fabric. Cut 3 x 9½” strips and recut into 12 x 9½” squares.

Block 2 - Make 20 of this block. The feature fabric is used for the centre square. Cut 3 x 4½” strips of feature fabric and recut into 20 x 4½” squares.

Four Patch Corners - Make four units for each block. For each block, sew together a 2" x 16½" strip of two colours. Recut into 8 x 2" x 3½" rectangles. Turn one rectangle and resew to make a four patch.

Quarter Square Triangles - Make four units for each block. Place a 2" x 20" strip of two colours right sides together. Using your Companion Angle ruler, cut 8 pairs of companion angles. Sew the pairs together ensuring you keep the same fabric on top each time. Join with another pair ensuring colours are opposite each other as per the diagram.

Once units are made, construct your block (as per a 9 patch block) following block diagram. Make 20 blocks in total.

Side Angles - Using your Side Angle Specialty Ruler, cut 4 strips using 9" as your block finished size. Cut 4 corners (using green markings on ruler) and 14 side angles (pink markings).

Cut sashing pieces as per sizes on below diagram. Please note - Sashing is joined to the side of blocks and then a long sashing is used to join strips together. (Ignore my little posts along the long strips - I am limited by my computer skills!)

Requirements

22 x 5" Squares of fabric
.55 Lining Fabric
22 x 5" Squares Iron on Pellon
1 Button
Handles
Mock Leather
Walking Foot or IDT on your Pfaff
Teflon Foot for Leather

¼" seams used throughout

Instructions

Attach iron on pellon to your squares. Decide your layout for your squares. Join the squares together to make 6 diagonal rows. Ensuring seams are pressed in opposite directions, place strips right side together and stitch together. Pin at the intersections of the squares to ensure seams line up. (Where you are joining a short strip to a long strip, ensure you start and finish ¼" from the edge to make it easier to turn the squares for the next part of construction.) Press the outer bag well.

If you are putting your monogram on the bag, do your embroidery at this stage, centreing the monogram on the squares as shown with an X. At this stage you can also do some decorative sewing around the squares within the bag as desired.

Using your bag outer as a pattern, place it onto your lining fabric and cut out your lining.

Using the diagram as a guide, fold the bag in half right sides together and stitch the seams along either side between A & B and then C & D. Fold the bag to align the BC points and then sew along the E line.

If you are attaching a button or fabric handles, prepare the handles and a loop for button and baste them to the bag along the top points at this stage.

Stitch the lining together in the same way as bag outer, leaving a 10cm gap to turn the bag out. If you are putting a pocket inside the bag, cut out and prepare to your choice of size at this stage. Attach it to the lining.

Place bag and lining right sides together and sew around top of bag. Clip into points and trim off any excess wadding to make turning out easier. Turn out bag. Press well. Topstitch around top of bag. If you are attaching leather handles, cut out 4 tabs from mock leather, Place them through the handles loops and the squares at either side of the bag point where handle is being attached. Sew through all layers.

Attach button and enjoy your bag!
